Salonboat Stern Amsterdam

A boat that was once built for the directors of one of the Netherlands' largest shipping companies and later became a classic salon boat for private cruises through Amsterdam.

That is the story of De Stern.

Built in 1920 on behalf of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Stoomboot Maatschappij, better known as KNSM, De Stern was originally used as an executive vessel. Company directors were transported across the IJ, while important guests were welcomed on board for exclusive cruises.

More than a century later, De Stern still has that distinctive character.

Built for Representation

In 1920, KNSM was a major name in Dutch shipping.

For a company like KNSM, an executive vessel was more than simply a practical means of transport. It was a place where business relationships were nurtured, conversations were held and important guests were welcomed.

De Stern was built specifically for this purpose. It is an interesting part of her history to keep in mind when you step aboard today.

Because although her purpose has changed, the idea behind the boat has remained remarkably similar: welcoming people on the water, in an exceptional setting, with Amsterdam as the backdrop.

De Stern and the IJ River

De Stern's history is literally connected to Amsterdam's waterways.

As a former KNSM executive vessel, she transported company directors across the River IJ and welcomed important guests on exclusive cruises. When KNSM ceased its activities in 1981, De Stern continued to sail Amsterdam's waterways.

She did not disappear from the cityscape. Instead, she remained part of Amsterdam's maritime history.

A New Chapter

In 2015, De Stern underwent a complete restoration. She subsequently became part of the Private Boat Tours fleet. The restoration brought back her historic character while modern amenities were added to provide contemporary comfort.

It is precisely this combination of old and new that makes De Stern so special. You are not visiting a museum ship where you simply look at the past. You are actually sailing on the historic vessel itself.

Classic Character, Modern Comfort

On board, De Stern offers full standing headroom, heating, a sound system and a built-in toilet.

Her spacious aft deck and sliding roof also allow guests to make the most of the water on sunny days. De Stern can accommodate up to 12 guests.

This makes her an excellent choice for relaxed private boat tours as well as special gatherings and celebrations.

A Boat with Executive Elegance

Because of her history as an executive vessel, De Stern has a naturally refined and representative character.

That makes her particularly well suited to corporate occasions.

Welcoming a business partner? Bringing a small team together? Planning an exclusive corporate event?

Instead of choosing a conventional meeting room, take to the water.

As the captain navigates Amsterdam's historic canals, the surroundings are constantly changing.
